Colorado Jugger League Policy Letter: Mile High Open Tournament Format Update

Jugger is a unique and dynamic sport that thrives on its strong sense of community while simultaneously fostering a competitive spirit. Striking an effective balance between these two core elements—community engagement and competitive integrity—is essential to ensuring the continued growth and enjoyment of the sport for all participants.

The Mile High Open (MHO) tournaments hosted by the Colorado Jugger League (CJL) have consistently proven to be a resounding success, drawing enthusiastic participation from teams across the United States. However, in reviewing feedback from previous tournaments, a recurring theme has emerged: teams traveling from diverse geographic regions have expressed a desire for greater opportunities to compete against opponents beyond their local areas. This input highlights the need to enhance the tournament experience by maximizing inter-regional matchups while preserving the camaraderie that defines the Jugger community.

To address this feedback and achieve an optimal balance between community interaction and competitive play, the Colorado Jugger League is pleased to announce the implementation of a hybrid tournament format for the upcoming Mile High Open. This new structure is designed to provide participants with a robust and varied playing experience.

The tournament will span two days, with the first day and a half dedicated to a round-robin format. This phase will emphasize broad team interaction, enabling as much cross-pollination as possible between squads from different regions through a series of scheduled matches. Teams will be ranked based on a stratification of points scored and points allowed throughout the entirety of the tournament. This scoring methodology ensures that every play, from the opening match to the final round-robin game, directly contributes to a team’s overall success and standing. In contrast to previous Mile High Open tournaments, this approach eliminates any incentive for teams to adopt a relaxed strategy during the initial day of play, encouraging consistent effort and competitive integrity across all stages of the event.

Following this, the latter half of Sunday will transition into a single-elimination bracket, featuring only the eight highest-seeded teams as determined by their performance in the round-robin stage. This competitive culmination will offer top-performing teams the chance to showcase their skills in a high-stakes setting.

The Colorado Jugger League is committed to ensuring a seamless and enjoyable tournament for all involved. Additional details, including registration procedures, scheduling specifics, and logistical updates, will be forthcoming as planning progresses. We encourage teams to stay tuned for further announcements and to prepare for an exciting and well-rounded Jugger experience at the Mile High Open.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the sport of Jugger. We look forward to seeing you on the field this July.

Sincerely,
[The Colorado Jugger League]

WE'RE READY TO BRING IT.  ARE YOU?
